What Color are your Skittles?

Lesson: Using spreadsheets to create a Pie Chart


Instructions:

1) Open: Programs / OpenOfficeOrg / Select the “Math” or "Spreadsheet" program

2) Save as: MyPieChart.ods in your personal folder located in the LAB drive!!

3) In the first column, type the following:

Strawberry  
Orange  
Lime  
Lemon  
Grape  

4) In the second column, type the total number of each color candy from your bag:

Strawberry
10
Orange
15
Lime
8
Lemon
12
Grape
18

5) When done, select your data cells in both colmns (don't select any empty cells).

6) With cells highlighted, choose from the Menu Bar: Insert / Chart

7) A chart will pop on your screen, along with a "Chart Wizard" box. On the left side column, make these choices after clicking the catagory:

Chart Type:
- Select 'Pie Chart'
- Click on the different illustrations to see  how your chart changes, and choose one of the Pie Chart formats.
- Check the '3D Look'
- Choose 'simple' or 'realistic' view

Data Range:
- Data series in Columns should be selected,
- First column as label should be checked.

Data Series:
- This section is OK, it shows you the cells you have selected.

Chart Elements:
- Title: Skittles Pie Chart
- Subtitle: Your name
- Display legend should be checked
- Select a location you want your legend to appear (left, right, etc.)

Click 'Finish' when done

Now you can resize your graph.

Try changing a number in the 2nd column of data, and watch your graph change accordingly!

When done, resave your work
to your personal folder located in the
LAB drive!!

Advanced Work:

To edit the Legend (format the font type and size):
-
Double click on the chart to select it, then right click on the words
- Select "Format Legend". Select font type, size, ect.

To edit the color of the chart slices and legend (this can be tricky, don't get frustrated if it doesn't work, it only worked once for me!):
- First, double click on the white part of the chart
- Right click directly on the chart, choolse '3D View'
- Under Appearance, check 'object borders', OK
- Right click directly on a line between 2 slices.
- Select "Format Data Point"
- Pop up window shows the current color, select a new color, OK


When done, resave your work
to your personal folder located in the
LAB drive!!

  • When logged in, go to top of page and click 'Groups / My Groups '

  • Go to OLH Bulldogs (not OLH Kids group) group and hit "Play"

  • Choose a category you like, and start playing!

    How it Works: It gives you a question, and you click on the best answer.
    When you are right, rice starts filling the bowl on the right. you can change subject if you get bored with this one. Log in from home and keep earning rice for your grade!
